Open Water Referral - Cost £195

What is it?

This is the first level course that, on certification, will free you up to dive with other qualified divers, plan and conduct your own dives within certain limits, hire equipment , get air fills and go on to other diving courses. It is the first main rung on the ladder and will open up a huge and wonderful new world for you. The Open Water Referral is a full Open Water course without the four Open Water dives - these are then done abroad. This is for people who want to do the basic training in the UK but dive in warm water.

Can anyone do it – are there any pre-requisites?

This course is open to people over the age of 15 years. As mentioned in the earlier general section – you will need to be in reasonable health and complete the self assessment medical questionnaire. It goes without saying that being able to swim is an obvious pre-requisite.

What does the course entail?

The course comprises 2 main sections – the first two will be run in parallel over the duration of the course:

  1. Knowledge development – This entails reading an informative manual – or doing this via the e-learning facility. This you can do at your own leisure and at home or wherever suits you. Full details can be given of the options so you can choose which suits you best – please ring or email. There are self assessment quizzes to help you along the way and knowledge reviews which you will need to complete. You will also watch a DVD which elaborates the content of the manual and begins to seriously whet your appetite for your sessions in the water. You don't need to be an Einstein to get though this and you will be reviewing them with one of our instructors who can go over anything you need help with. There is a small test at the end of the "class-room sessions" – again – nothing to fear. We will spread the knowledge development section over a number of sessions because we want to get you in the water as soon as possible.
  2. Confined water (eg swimming pool) over several sessions - During the pool sessions we will ask you to demonstrate your basic fitness with some fairly low level stamina tests (swim 200 metres and tread water for 10 minutes). The main emphasis is to introduce you to SCUBA equipment and then teach you how to use it safely and develop your buoyancy control skills over a few pool sessions.
